A visit to Costa Rica : internationally renowned for its biodiversity and political stability.

Costa Rica literally meaning the Rich Coast, officially the republic of Costa Rica is a country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the southeast, the pacific ocean to the west, the Caribbean sea to the east and Euacador to the south. It has a population of around 4.5 million of whom nearly a quarter live in the metropolitan area of the capital and largest city of San Jose.

Its rapidly developing economy , once heavily dependent on agriculture, has diversified  to include sectors such as finance , pharmaceuticals and ecotourism. It is also known for its progressive environmental policies, being the only country to meet all  five UNDP criteria to measure environmental sustainability. It was identified by the NEF as the greenest country in the world in 2009.

Historically  Costa Rica has generally enjoyed greater peace and more consistent political stability compared with many of its fellow Latin American nations. With uninterrupted democracy dating back to at least 1948, the country is the region ‘s most stable.

Costa Rica is located between 8 and 12 degrees north of the equator thus its climate is tropical year round despite having many micro climates due to such factors like elevation, rainfall etc.

Costa Rica is home to a rich variety of plants and animals, it contains 5% of the world’s biodiversity. Around 25 % of the country ‘s land area is in protected national parks and protected areas, the largest percentage of protected areas in the world. One of its national park , the Corcovado national park is internationally renowned among ecologists for its biodiversity including big cats and tapirs and is where visitors can expect to see an abundance of wildlife. There is also Tortuguero national park which is home to spider howler , monkeys and 320 species of birds and a variety of reptiles.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is home to about 2000 plant species including numerous orchids , over 400 types of birds and more than 100 species of mammals can be found there. Over 840 species of birds have been identified in Costa Rica.

The primary language spoken in Costa Rica is Spanish and interestingly its literacy rate is 96.3 %, one of the highest in the region.

Spain : a land of diversity

Spain is a land of diversity in both it’s landscape and it’s people. Much of it is clothed with wheat fields , grapevines and olive trees. To the south , only some 14 kilometres of water separates mainland Spain from the African continent.

In one recent year , more than 68 million people visited Spain. Most come for the sunshine, the golden beaches and the country ‘s artistic, historical and architectural treasures. From the landscape perspective , Toledo captures the historical and cultural flavor of Spain. It was designated a World Heritage site in 1986 and is a popular stop for tourists. Equally important, Spanish people are friendly and outgoing, most profess to the Roman Catholic.

The marvels of creation : A visit to Serengeti National Park.

Serengeti National Park is a Tanzanian national park in the Serengeti ecosystem in the Mara and Simiyu regions. It is famous for it’s migration of over 1.5 million white-bearded wildebeest and more than 250 000 zebras and its numerous Nile crocodiles. It is Tanzania’s oldest national park and remains the flagship of the country’s tourism industry. It has over 2500 lions and more than 1 million wildebeest. The park covers 14 750 square kilometres of grassland plains.

The park is worldwide known for it’s scenery and magnificent wildlife.Some of the most popular animals include :

  • Masai lion : Serengeti is believed to hold the largest population of lions in Africa due in part to the abundance of prey species. More than 3000 lions live in this ecosystem.
  • African leopard : Commonly seen in the Seronera region but are present throughout the park with the population approximately around 1000.
  • African cheetah : It is estimated that they are over 1000 in the park
  • African bush elephant : Estimated to be numbering over 5000.
  • Eastern black rhinoceros : mainly found around the kopjes in the centre of the park.
  • African Buffalo : Still abundant and present in healthy numbers.
  • Serengeti Wildebeest : The park is home to the spectacular migratory events. The population of migratory wildebeest is around 1.2 million.
  • Zebras : Available in large numbers as well.

Apart from those mentioned above it is also home for Masai giraffes , warthogs, waterbucks, impala and many more. Carnivores include some 4000 spotted hyena, jackals , honey badger, striped hyena.

It also boost about 500 bird species, including ostrich, secretary bird, kori bustards,  crowned cranes, martial eagles, lovebirds and many species of vultures.

Why visit Serengeti?

It is the one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas and is an ongoing source of inspiration to writers, filmmakers and photographers. It is renowned as the site of the great annual migration when an estimated 3 million antelope  mostly wildebeest migrate to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve. Places around the world: Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is nestled in Central Asia and is bordered by Kazkhstan , Uzbekistan , Tajikistan, and China. Mountains cover nearly 90 % of the country. It boasts the  highest point of  the Tian Shan Mountain range , which is 7439 m above sea level.

Forest cover about 4 % of the landmass of the country. It is noteworthy that one of the planet’s largest natural growth walnut forest is found in Kyrgyzstan. Hospitality and respect are well known traits of the Kyrgyz people. The population of the country is 5 776 000 , languages used are Kirghiz and Russian and the religion is mainly Islam. Exports are cotton , wool, gold , mercury and uranium. It is also home to snow leopards, lynx and sheep.

Some of the nicer places to visit in Kyrgyzstan are Ala Archa National Park – where you will find rivers, glaciers and natural reserves, Osh Bazaar, Burana Tower – archaeological site and architecture, Altyn Arashan – where you will find hot spring, hiking backpacking and canyon , State History Museum and Panfilov Park.
